Every Board Has a Story
Carbon Smart Wood™ is Cambium's own line of thermally modified and naturally durable wood, salvaged and manufactured in the USA from American trees that would otherwise go to waste. Traceable from source to delivery.

Preventing waste and preserving every tree’s story
Most wood loses its history the moment it’s milled, but Carbon Smart Wood preserves it. As the flagship product from Cambium, we track every board from standing tree to final build.
Wood Worth Saving
These trees weren't planted for lumber. They grew in backyards and along streets, came down in storms, fell to disease, or reached the end of their lives, and the wood was headed for waste. We turn it into something you can build with.
Made From Salvage
Salvaged and under-utilized trees that came down through disease, decay, death, or development. Wood that would otherwise be chipped, burned, or landfilled.
Domestically Sourced
American trees, milled in American facilities. Not harvested abroad, and not shipped overseas for processing.
Traceable from Source
Every board is tracked from where it started to where it ships, with the documentation to back it up for certifications and compliance.
Built to Perform
Dimensionally stable, decay resistant, and built to last outdoors or in, whether the durability comes from thermal modification or a naturally durable species.
Chemical Free
Nothing added, ever. The wood is either modified with heat and steam alone or naturally durable by species, so there is nothing to leach or off-gas.
Rich, Real Wood
Genuine grain, depth, and warmth, with color that runs through the board. A material with character, not a manufactured imitation of it.

A material difference
In key processes where conventional materials emit carbon, Carbon Smart Wood stores it. Made from salvaged trees that would otherwise be chipped, burned, or sent to landfills, Carbon Smart Wood carries impact in every board.
less CO2 than other wood
less CO2 than wood-plastic composites

Frequently asked
What is Carbon Smart Wood?
Carbon Smart Wood™ is Cambium's own line of sustainable wood, salvaged from American trees and either thermally modified or naturally durable by species. It performs across interior and exterior applications, from decking and cladding to flooring, trim, and sauna, and every board is traceable from source to delivery.
Where does the wood come from?
It is salvaged and under-utilized American wood: trees taken down in urban removals, lost to storms and disease, or left over from the fresh-cut lumber stream. These are trees that would otherwise be chipped, burned, or landfilled. We prioritize salvaged and under-utilized material across a domestic supply chain.
What does traceable mean?
Every board is tracked from its source through to delivery. You can see where your material came from and get the documentation you need for certifications and compliance.
How is it made?
Many of Carbon Smart Wood's species are thermally modified in a three-phase kiln process that uses only heat and steam, with no chemicals. The heat restructures the wood's cells, removing the sugars that feed rot and insects and making the wood absorb far less water. The result is a stable, decay-resistant board with a richer tone all the way through. A few species, like cedar, are naturally durable and used without modification.
What can it be used for?
Interior and exterior applications alike: decking, siding and cladding, flooring, trim, sauna, and furniture. It can stand in for tropical hardwoods, chemically treated lumber, and composites. One caveat: thermally modified wood is not intended for structural use, so standard framing should still carry load-bearing elements.
Does it require maintenance?
No finish is required. Left unfinished, the wood weathers to a natural silver-gray patina and is built to last for decades. If holding the original color matters, a penetrating UV oil (CUTEK® Extreme is recommended) can be applied and reapplied as needed; color longevity depends on species, exposure, and surface prep.
What species are available?
The lineup spans thermally modified hardwoods and softwoods plus naturally durable cedar, including Thermal Oak, Silky Cedar, Thermal Poplar, and Douglas Fir, with more by application. Each species has its own page with grain, tone, and recommended uses.
