What Cambium materials are the best fit for furniture?
Our two material families —— thermal wood and microCLT —— tend to be our best fits for the furniture space. Thermally modified species — Thermal Oak, Thermal Ash, Thermal Pine, and Thermal Poplar — for outdoor applications: bench slats and frames, exterior tabletops, and sauna benching. And microCLT panels for tabletops, desk surfaces, bench tops, and casegoods components. All are sourced and produced in the U.S.
What is thermally modified wood?
Wood that has been through a kiln process using only heat and steam, with no chemicals. It removes the moisture, sugars, and starches that cause rot and insect damage, and deepens the color through the full thickness of the board. Carbon Smart Wood™ is certified to AWPA Use Class UC3B (above ground, exposed), sourced and processed entirely in the U.S., and suitable for any outdoor North American climate.
What is MicroCLT? Is it solid wood, plywood, or something in between?
MicroCLT is a hybrid solid wood panel that combines the natural character and workability of plywood with the stability of cross-laminated construction. It behaves more consistently than traditional solid wood, while offering a more substantial, durable, solid-wood feel and machining experience than conventional plywood.
Can it replace ipe or teak in an outdoor collection?
For most applications, yes. Class 1 durable thermally modified species deliver comparable exterior performance to tropical hardwood, with dimensional stability and decay resistance built in rather than relying on natural oils. The differences worth planning around are color behavior over time and available profile dimensions — our team can walk through both against your current spec.
Will it gray over time?
Left unfinished, yes. Thermally modified wood weathers to a silver-gray patina, and that is a color change, not a performance change. Many outdoor collections choose it on purpose. To hold the original tone, apply a penetrating oil with a UV colortone and reapply as needed — clear oils alone are not UV resistant.
Can you supply at production volume?
We operate as a programmatic supply partner, not a spot-market seller. Because we coordinate a network of regional sawmills rather than depending on a single mill, we can hold species and grade consistency across production runs. Volume, cadence, and delivery schedule get scoped against your production calendar before any commitment.
How does an evaluation start?
With samples. Tell us the application and the spec, and we send material matched to it. Your team runs it through machining, finishing, and QA. If it performs, we scope volume and cadence. If it doesn't, you've spent an afternoon. Nothing changes on your floor until the material proves itself.
