Performance Without Compromise

For too long, building in fire country or harsh climates meant settling for fiber cement and composites. Mataverde delivers the warmth and grain of natural wood with the fire ratings, durability, and code compliance those projects demand.

Fire Protection, Built In

SaferWood's Thermex-FR® treatment penetrates the wood at the cellular level. It's not a coating, so it won't wash off, flake, or fade over time.

WUI and IWUI Compliant

Class A fire rated and ignition resistant, meeting California Chapter 7A and IWUIC standards per ICC-ES, with a passed OSFM 10-year outdoor weathering test.

Thermally Modified Strength

Thermal Hemlock is modified gently in a vacuum kiln, earning a Class 1 durability rating and staying less brittle than conventional thermally modified wood.

Warranted for the Long Run

SaferWood carries a limited lifetime warranty on its fire-retardant treatment, and Thermal Hemlock decking is backed by a 20-year limited warranty.

Frequently asked

  • What is Mataverde?

Mataverde® is a premium exterior wood brand focused on high-performance siding, decking, and outdoor materials. Through Cambium, two of its flagship lines are available: SaferWood® fire-retardant treated Western Red Cedar for high-fire-risk zones, and Thermal Hemlock, a thermally modified wood built for stability and durability in any climate.

  • What is SaferWood® Western Red Cedar?

SaferWood is real Western Red Cedar treated with Thermex-FR®, a proprietary, non-toxic fire retardant, and offered in siding, decking, fencing, and posts. It carries a Class A fire rating, is classified as ignition resistant, and meets WUI and IWUI requirements, so projects in wildfire-prone areas can use genuine wood instead of fiber cement or composites.

  • Is the fire treatment just a surface coating?

No. Thermex-FR® is pressure-applied and bonds into the wood's cellular structure, creating permanent, full-depth protection. It won't leach out in rain or humidity, won't wash or flake off, and passed California's OSFM 10-year outdoor weathering test. The treatment is warranted for the life of the wood.

  • What is Thermal Hemlock?

Thermal Hemlock is upper-grade Western Hemlock modified with heat and pressure in a vacuum kiln, with no chemicals or additives. The gentler, lower-temperature process avoids the brittleness common to thermally modified wood and earns a Class 1 durability rating, with rich warm brown tones, a Janka hardness of 540, and 20+ years of expected service outdoors.

  • Where do these materials work best?

SaferWood is the go-to for projects in WUI and high-fire-severity zones, from siding and soffits to decking, fencing, and ground-contact posts. Thermal Hemlock decking performs in all climates and suits backyard decks, rooftop decks, and commercial outdoor spaces. Both pair naturally with rainscreen assemblies like Climate-Shield®.

  • How do they weather and what maintenance is needed?

Both lines can be finished with an oil-based stain to hold their color, or left to weather naturally to a silver-gray patina. Maintenance is simple: an annual cleaning with a biodegradable cleaner, and optional refinishing if you prefer the like-new look. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals.
