Hardwood That Stays Put

Tropical Toughness From American Oak

Thermal Oak is Class 1 durable, the exterior performance ipe is specified for, from salvaged American red oak rather than imported tropical timber.

Stable Underfoot

The wood absorbs far less water once modified, so it resists the cupping, warping, and seasonal movement that open up gaps and cause callbacks.

Rot-Resistant Without Chemicals

Thermal modification strips out the moisture and sugars that feed rot and insects, using only heat and steam. No chemical preservatives.

Color That Runs Deep

The process deepens the wood to a warm tone that runs through the full thickness of the board, with the refined grain of real hardwood.

Frequently asked

  • What is porch flooring made from?

Thermal Oak from Carbon Smart Wood. It is American red oak, thermally modified into a Class 1 durable exterior material, made in the USA and backed by a limited 20-year warranty.

  • What is thermally modified wood?

Wood that has been through a three-phase kiln process using only heat and steam, with no chemicals. It removes the moisture, sugars, and starches that cause rot and insect damage, and deepens the color through the full thickness of the board, producing a dimensionally stable material rated for exterior use.

  • How does it compare to tropical hardwood?

Thermal Oak is Class 1 durable, the same top rating for decay resistance that ipe is known for, so it delivers comparable exterior performance. The difference is the source: it comes from salvaged American red oak rather than imported tropical timber.

  • Does it require maintenance?

No finish is required. Left unfinished, the boards weather to a silver-gray patina, which is a color change rather than a performance change. To hold the original tone, apply a penetrating oil with a UV colortone (CUTEK Extreme is recommended; clear oils alone are not UV resistant) and reapply as needed.

  • Where does the wood come from?

It is salvaged American red oak, one of the most abundant hardwoods in the country, given a second life as a high-performance exterior material.
