White oak (Quercus alba) is one of the most widely specified hardwoods in North America. Prized for its strength, tight grain structure, and balanced tone, it has long been used in flooring, furniture, cabinetry, and architectural millwork. Naturally rich in tyloses, the cellular structures that reduce porosity, white oak offers improved moisture resistance compared to many other hardwoods. While capable of exterior use in certain contexts, Cambium recommends white oak for interior architectural applications. White oak is a heavy, dense hardwood with high strength and a coarse but relatively tight grain. Its color ranges from light beige to medium brown, often with an olive undertone. In quartersawn boards, prominent ray fleck creates a distinctive linear figure. Cut style significantly impacts appearance. Flat-sawn boards display cathedral grain, while rift- and quarter-sawn boards offer a more linear, uniform look. Natural variation in color and grain is inherent to the species and should be expected.
