Made to Be Seen Up Close

Color All the Way Through

Thermal modification deepens the wood's color through the full thickness of the board, not just the surface. Cut it, miter it, scribe it to an outlet, and the tone stays consistent.

Chemical-Free, Indoors

The process uses only heat and steam. There are no added chemicals or preservatives to off-gas into the room, which matters for interior air quality.

Grain Worth Showing

Thermal Sycamore carries a lace-like ray fleck that thermal modification deepens and accentuates. WalNOT brings the fine, even texture and warm tone of walnut.

Two Species, Two Looks

WalNOT for rich, walnut-like warmth. Thermal Sycamore for distinctive figure. Both work as full walls, accents, and design-led feature work.

Design-Led by Default

Both species are built for feature work: full walls, accent panels, ceilings, and the kind of interior detail that gets noticed. Talk to our team about profiles and sizing for your design.

Sourced with Transparency

Both species come from abundant, underused American hardwoods, milled domestically and given a premium second use indoors.

Frequently asked

  • What interior cladding does Cambium offer?

Two species, both from Carbon Smart Wood. WalNOT is soft maple, thermally modified until it takes on the deep, warm tone of walnut. Thermal Sycamore is prized for its distinctive, lace-like grain. Both are made in the USA.

  • What is WalNOT?

One of Cambium's original thermal products. Soft maple is thermally modified using only heat and steam until it develops a deep, uniform color close to walnut, which is where the name comes from. The result gives an abundant, underused American species the rich look of walnut, with improved dimensional stability. It is an interior product, ideal for cladding, accent walls, and design-led work.

  • What is Thermal Sycamore?

American sycamore, prized for its grain, including the lace-like ray fleck that makes quartersawn sycamore so distinctive. Thermal modification, using only heat and steam, deepens and accentuates that figure while adding durability. It is a design-forward choice for feature walls and interior detail.

  • What is thermally modified wood?

Wood that has been through a kiln process using only heat and steam, with no chemicals. The process changes the naturally occurring sugars in the wood, deepening the color through the full thickness of the board and improving dimensional stability. Indoors, that means a rich tone that runs all the way through and boards that hold their place through seasonal humidity swings.

  • Are there any added chemicals?

No. Thermal modification relies on heat and steam alone, with no preservatives or chemical treatments. There is nothing to off-gas into the space, which makes it well suited to interior walls and enclosed rooms.

  • What profiles and sizes are available?

Interior cladding comes in a range of profiles and widths to suit the look you are after, from clean tongue-and-groove to shiplap with intentional reveals. Talk to our team for current profiles, sizing, and grades.

  • Where does the wood come from?

Both species are abundant American hardwoods, domestically sourced and milled. WalNOT begins as soft maple, one of the most available species in the country, and sycamore is likewise abundant and underused. Cladding is a way to put more of each tree to good use.

  • Can I use it outside?

WalNOT is an interior product and should stay indoors. If you are cladding an exterior wall, our thermally modified exterior species and naturally durable cedar are built for it. See Exterior Cladding, or talk to our team about the right material for the elevation.
