From Restoration to Flooring

Meet EdgeGrain™

Solid wood tiles built from strips rather than wide planks, assembled without glue. It is a format that uses more of every tree and puts the harder edge of the grain underfoot.

Pacific Northwest Species

A genuine range, from golden larch and honeyed oak to rosy madrone and chocolate claro walnut. Each species brings its own grain and color, and no two floors read the same.

Sourced Through Restoration

Many of these species come from forest health work: sagebrush habitat restoration, salvage from tree disease, and removals from orchards and urban landscapes.

Built to Wear In

Dense hardwoods and hard-wearing softwoods that develop a patina over generations rather than wearing out. These are floors that get better with age.

Regionally Grown and Milled

Grown and milled on Oregon forestland, with a short distance from forest to finished floor. Every species has a place it comes from.

Frequently asked

  • What flooring does Cambium offer?

Zena's EdgeGrain flooring line, made in Oregon from Pacific Northwest species: Oregon White Oak, Oregon Ash, Bigleaf Maple, Western Walnut, Western Larch, Douglas Fir, Western Juniper, Madrone, and Tanoak. Each is an interior floor with its own character.

  • What is EdgeGrain flooring?

Instead of wide planks, EdgeGrain floors are solid wood tiles built up from narrow strips and assembled without glue. Turning the strips on edge puts the harder edge of the grain at the surface, and building from strips makes use of more of each tree than plank flooring can.

  • How do the species differ in look?

Widely. Oregon White Oak runs warm and honeyed; Oregon Ash carries a bold, graphic grain; Bigleaf Maple is light and creamy, sometimes with shimmering quilt or curl figure. Western Walnut moves through chocolate, amber, and smoke. Western Larch is golden, Western Juniper is wild and knotty with amber tones, Madrone blushes rosy to burnt sienna, and Tanoak mills into a quietly capable, oak-like floor. Individual species pages go deeper.

  • Where does the wood come from?

The Pacific Northwest, much of it tied to forest health. Western Juniper comes from sagebrush restoration that supports Sage Grouse habitat. Tanoak and Oregon Ash are milled from trees affected by disease and pests. Western Walnut comes from retired orchards and urban removals. Bigleaf Maple and Oregon White Oak are grown and milled on Zena's own Willamette Valley forestland.

  • Is it a sustainable choice?

The sourcing is built around it. Many species are milled from restoration thinning, salvage, and removals that were going to happen anyway, and the EdgeGrain format uses more of each tree than wide-plank flooring. Zena grows and mills much of its material on regional Oregon forestland, keeping the distance from forest to floor short.
