Character Guide
Colonel Yoseph Cohen
Yoseph Cohen was born on 23 June 2433, on the planet New Israel to parents Levi and Sara. He was raised in traditional Judaic fashion, making him a very religious person, and passed through his primary education classes in the upper twenty five percentile. He was mustered into the CDF at the standard age of 17. He got his chance to become an officer during a combat engagement on board the destroyer Jericho. By taking over for the deceased navigator, Yoseph saved his ship, and was given an officers commission.
Yoseph is a career solider, very conservative, takes orders well and is a model solider, but at the same if you gave him an order to line up and kill 50 civilians, he'd shoot you before doing it. He's more concerned with doing the right thing than anything else. His penchant for innovation earned him command of the destroyer CSV Yitzakh Rabin, and now, the dreadnaught CSV Lion of Judah.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavick Fynd
Mavick Fynd was born on 3 January 2456, on the planet Saurius. He had no identifiable parents. A member of the fast-growing and physically powerful race of sentient reptiles called the Sauroids, Mavick was raised in the warrior tradition, which included the tradition of what is known as "Sauroid Christianity", a Sauroid version of the human religion of Christianity. At age 1.2, roughly sixteen years when compared to human maturation rates, he was mustered into the CDF. He made his way into the officer corps through skill and intelligence in battle, serving on several ships, notably the missile frigate Jehosaphat and the fleet carrier Muhammad.
Mavick has a quick tongue, and is very jovial, so he doesn't make enemies. Beneath his humor and good wit lies a deeply spiritual person; Mavick spends much of his free time praying in the Christian chapel aboard ship.
Lieutenant Colonel Calvin Demood
Calvin Demood was born on 12 December 2416, on the planet New Congo to parents Joseph and Michelle. Calvin was raised in a strict Christian household with four other children, and as the oldest was typically held responsible for the actions of his younger siblings. At age 16 Calvin was mustered into the CDF. He was assigned to the Marines, where he proved himself a very skilled soldier.
At age 20 he was inducted into the Special Operations branch of the Marines, as a member of the unit known as the Soldiers of the Cross. He joined the Knights Templar, an order of Marines and high-ranking CDF officers of the Christian faith, but after his first tour of duty Calvin mysteriously decided to leave the Knights Templar. He spent the next twenty years working his way through the ranks. But at his advanced age, it is likely the end of his first tour of duty in the Lion of Judah will see him permenantly placed as an instructor, something Calvin is not eager to see.
Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Amier
Hassan Amier was born on 9 February 2432, on the planet Yemen III to parents Makar and Johi Amier. Hassan had a rigorous Islamic upbringing, and it is no wonder that at age 16 he enthusiastically joined the CDF. He went into training as a pilot after he scored high on those aptitude tests, and spent the first six years of his career as a shuttle pilot attached to space stations, and the missile frigate Jehosaphat. Against the recommendations of then-Captain Yoseph Cohen, Hassan was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Muhammad as a fighter pilot. He quickly proved an expert ace, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at age 30.
In March 2464, Hassan accepted re-assignment from the Muhammad to the Lion of Judah to serve as the ship's fighter wing commander. He is a very pious individual, and usually gets along with others even if they are not Muslims. The lone exception is Doctor Hayworth, who has managed to get on Hassan's bad side.
Doctor (Lieutenant Colonel) Achmed Hassul
Achmed Hassul was born on 13 August 2419, on the planet Dyson to parents Shakur and Mahiqa Hassul. Hassul was raised on the station in orbit over the planet, because Dyson's crushing gravity had already killed his older siblings through heart failure. Although his parents instilled in him an Islamic education, Hassul was fascinated by technology and science. At age 16 he was mustered into the CDF. In his first battle, an infantry engagement on Osceola II, Hassul's eye was ripped from his socket by a League Marine during close combat. Hassul claims that while in medical care, he had a vision, in which Allah directed him to become a doctor.
Thus, at age 19, Achmed Hassul entered the New Israel Medical Institute. He spent eight years at the New Israel Medical Institute, majoring in internal medicine and advanced prosthetics. He even helped design the artificial eye he now uses. He did his obligated three tours of duty aboard the missile cruiser Jehosaphat and light carrier Solomon's Wisdom from 2452-56, and spent the rest of the time working at the NIMI by teaching medical courses and giving lectures. In 2464, Yoseph Cohen offered him the position of chief medical officer on the Lion of Judah, which is where he is now stationed. Unlike his co-religionist Hassan, Hassul is an old acquaitance of Doctor Hayworth, and the two get along quite nicely.
Major David Hanson
David Hanson was born on 19 October 2433, on the planet Canaan to parents Andrew and Elizabeth Hanson. Raised in what was a Christian household, David became a "geek" early in his life by becoming an avid fan of technology and computers. He had a lifelong dream to design his own starships, and his excellence in school led him to be accepted into the Engineering Studies branch of the Canaan Military Academy. Along with the obligatory military training given to Coalition citizens sixteen and older, David spent five years being taught advanced engineering principles by CAS professors. He was given an honorary master's degree in computer operation, programming, and Applied Science at the age of 22. He began serving on starships of various types, eventually becoming chief engineering officer of the destroyer CSV Yitzakh Rabin. During his service, he never lost interest in technology, always keeping up with the latest advances.
After the Rabin was destroyed, David was invited to be the chief engineer of the CSV Lion of Judah, do to his knowledge of the advanced systems involved in the ship. It was, for him, the chance of a lifetime: to work alongside Doctor Benjamin Hayworth, the renowned physicist who had led the team that developed the negmatter reactor that served as the ship's primary power source. David's hero worship is such that it annoys the doctor, but that does not stop David from being an ingenious engineer, frequently capable of coming up with the right answers to the right questions.

Lieutenant 1st Class Ruth Goldburg
Ruth Goldburg was born on 3 June 2440, on the planet Babylon VI to parents Malachi and Esther Goldburg. Ruth was a jovial child as a girl, doted on by her parents since they had no other children, but her world came crashing down around her in 2354. The League attacked the Babylon system and bombed her planet. Malachi, a reservist pilot, was killed in the opening skirmishes, and Esther died after an explosion crushed their home, having pushed Ruth out of the door at just the right moment to save her life. All that Ruth has left of her parents is her mother's golden Star of David pendant, which she now wears all of the time. Despite her young age Ruth fought with the guerrila units that defended the planet from the League invaders, and upon her evacuation from the world, was able to muster into the CDF a year ahead of time.
As a woman, she was barred from infantry duty, so Ruth ended up serving on starships. Her quick aim and abilities as a gunner came to the attention of the CDF, and she was given an officer's commission. In 2463, she was assigned to the CSV Yitzakh Rabin as a Lieutentant, 2nd Class. She impressed Yoseph Cohen with her gunnery skills, so much so that Yoseph made her his tactical officer. When given command of the CSV Lion of Judah in March 2464, Yoseph convinced General MacIntosh to let Ruth be his tactical officer despite her relative youth. Having already reviewed her record, MacIntosh agreed, and awarded her a promotion to Lieutenant 1st Class. She now serves as the tactical officer on the CSV Lion of Judah.
Major Shelly Hammond
Shelly Hammond was born on 18 July 2423, on the planet New Jericho to parents Alexander and Katherine Hammond. Raised in a moderately Christian household, Shelly admired her mother and father, both ship navigators who took turns serving aboard the family's private freighter. She proved an adept mathmatician, attracting the CDF's attention, and at age 15 Shelly was admitted to the Canaan Military Academy as a navigator-in-training. At age 19 she was assigned to the CSV Hawkeye to begin her first tour of duty. Unlike other navigators, who typically spend six months of down time after a tour of duty, Shelly revels in her job and accepts the usual six months up-three months down schedule the CDF allows it's officer corps.
In 2458 Colonel Andrew MacIntosh accepted her as navigator for the CSV Winston Churchill, and her attitude toward her job surprised the officer. Later, when MacIntosh was promoted to General and assigned as the flag officer responsible for the Lion of Judah's deployment, he convinced Yoseph Cohen to allow her to remain aboard as chief navigator. Yoseph agreed, although he considers the ship's first tour to be a probationary period on whether he will keep her or not.
Lieutenant 2nd Class Robert Taylor
Robert Taylor was born on 17 July 2433, on the planet New Israel to parents Edgar and Danielle Taylor. Taylor was raised in a conservative Baptist family, and showed remarkable abilities in the language arts. At age 16 he was admitted to Canaan Military Academy, to be trained as a military linguist. At age 18, he met Rebecca Lenore Grayson, another cadet at CMA, and they fell in love. Due to the conservative nature of his upbringing, Taylor spent over eighteen months courting Rebecca before deciding to marry her. They were married on her twentieth birthday, in the CMA Christian chapel. It was not to last, for she died on 12 November 2456 when the CSV Saint Joan of Arc was lost in action.
With grief in his heart, Taylor returned to his duties, and by 2463 was considered one of the best linguists in the CDF, as well as an efficient communications officer. This reputation led to his assignment to the CSV Lion of Judah in March 2464 as Communications Officer and Chief Linguist.
Sergeant Major Jessica Matunaaga
Jessica Matunaaga's birthdate is unknown, although she is estimated to be anywhere between 45 and 50 years of age. What is known is that she was born on the Native American colony of Osceola III sometime around 2414. The colony was attacked and held by the League in 2030, and Jessica was one of the many Coalition citizens used as slave labor during that time. It is unknown what happened to her during that time, and psych reports indicate it to be traumatic. After the colony was liberated, Jessica joined the CDF, appearing to be old enough for membership. Her exceptional physical strength and stamina convinced her superiors that she would be a worthy Marine, and she fought for over ten years as one, including a campaign where she met Calvin Demood. Despite her seniority Jessica has refused all offers for a commission, remaining a non-commissioned officer. In 2464, she was assigned as Sergeant Major on the CSV Lion of Judah, making her responsible for the conduct of nearly 6 thousand enlisted personnel. She has taken on this task with seeming relish.
Doctor Benjamin Hayworth
Benjamin Hayworth was born on 19 August 2415, on Canaan to parents Daniel and Samantha. Hayworth's parents were both professors at CAS, strict rationalists with an atheist humanist code. Hayworth grew up in agreement with them. He sometimes faced persecution as a child for not being a believer in God, but Hayworth refused to let that sway him from following in his parents' footsteps. At age 16 he was spared mustering into the CDF by an approved application to study at NIAS. He submitted his doctoral thesis twelve years later, becoming one of the leading Coalition experts on theoretical quantum physics by 2452. Hayworth was married at age 24 to a fellow student, Angela Baker Hayworth, and divorced at age 29. There were two children born of them, both having moved to live with the mother.
When the Goliath Project called for a working example of an anti-matter reactor small and stable enough to be used on a starship, the CAS appointed Hayworth to the team. It was not until 2458 that research and designs were complete, and the first two negmatter reactors were completed and tested in 2463 for delivery to the CDF. Hayworth agreed to train the Lion of Judah's engineering crew to use the ship's reactor, but due to the nature of the reactor, he has been asked to stay on the ship. He serves as an ad hoc engineer and scientific advisor to Colonel Cohen, although the two don't get along very well. Even worse is Hayworth's relationship with Hassan Amier; the two simply don't like each other. Dr. Hassul is one of the few devoutly religious people aboard that Hayworth likes and respects.
Elizabeth Mayweather
Elizabeth Mayweather was born on 3 August 2439, on the planet New Britain to parents Andrew and Callie Mayweather. Elizabeth was infatuated with science early in her life, and studied hard to become her class's best science student. At age 16, with her test scores for her final year of school, Mayweather applied to NIAS. Just three days before she was to report to the local training camp for mustering into the CDF, she was approved to attend the school, and Mayweather traveled to Canaan to become a scientist. At age 22 she received her master's degree in astrophysics, and decided to try for a doctorate in theoretical quantum physics. She was a junior member of the research team that finished development of the negmatter reactor, and assigned as Hayworth's personal assistant.
Elizabeth finds herself in the awkward position of defending her atheist mentor from others who disagree with him, despite her own Christian faith. She has tremendous respect for Hayworth as a scientist, but sometimes finds Haywroth's brashness and "devil-may-care" attitude to be annoying. She wants him to take a more diplomatic approach in dealing with the religionists of the ship. Elizabeth is a friendly, outgoing woman who makes friends easily, and to go with that she is a resourceful mind who is a great asset to the ship's crew. She is frequently found in engineering helping David cook up new ideas to make the ship run better.
