The story so far...
The 20th Century saw the rise of the World Society- a vicious organization of international neo-socialists who, through economic troubles and international crisis, seized power in several nations across the globe. Their actions spawned a third world war, in which one billion human beings died over the course of twenty years, many by genocidal methods not seen since the days of Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. Those of any creed... indeed, any ideology that was deemed socially pervasive... were hunted down like animals, forced to reject their ways of life under threat of torture and death.
As the World Society stood poised to win their final victory, a group of 20 million people comprised of many of the world's religions fled the Earth in sleeper ships. While they were asleep in cyrostasis, their ships moved tens of thousands of light years, via the newly invented "Lawrence Drive". Eventually, they came upon a Earth-like planet that they named Canaan. The colonists landed there, and for the next century worked hard to build a new home for themselves while they multiplied their number.
The colonists spread out among the nearby stars, colonizing more worlds. They encountered several alien races, such as the water-breathing Matrinads, and the reptilian Saurods. These races held religious beliefs much like those of the majority of the colonists, and created a sense of fraternity amongst the races. Thus, they formed the Terran Coalition, a republic based on the rule of law. An age of peace and prosperity had dawned.
It did not last, for in 2430, the World Society again appeared, seeking to destroy the last vestige of what they considered to be a disease. They were not alone, for in the previous centuries the World Society had joined forces with three other races bent on domination, to form the League of Sol. Fueled by the sweat and blood of those they had conquered, the League attacked the ill-prepared Coalition with a savage fury. In a surprise attack on Canaan, the League nearly destroyed the Coalition Defense Force, but was defeated by the arrival of reinforcements with only minutes to spare. The League fell back to their frontiers, preparing to strike again. As they regrouped, the Coalition began arming itself. The centuries of peace were over.
For the last thirty years, the Coalition has fought off attack after attack from the League. It is a dark time for humanity, and in this darkness, many have turned to their faith for guidance. Some fare better than others, and the increase in religious mentality within the Coalition's population has led to the creation of three extremist religious sects within the military, the Knights Templar, Allah's Wrath, and the Judges. Unlike their comrades, these organizations are willing to perform any deed in the name of killing their foes and earning martyrdom for their faiths.
It is in this era that the beleaguered Coalition agrees to the Goliath Project; the design and construction of a dreadnought, with the most advanced weapons, power systems, engines, and defensive technologies available. The year is now 2464, and the first ship of this project is about to come online, the CSV Lion of Judah.
Now, all that remains is to fight the good fight!
