TThe Liberal-Democrats are the mainstream left-wing party of the Coalition. Their ideals are defined by their belief that even capitalism needs regulation and that the rich can afford to pay a higher percentage share in order to maintain the Coalition's infrastructure and prevent widespread poverty and hunger. Not popular amongst many of the upper class (though the preferred party for the so-called "guilty rich kid" clique), the Liberal-Democrats have nevertheless managed to hold large chunks of the legislature in the past thanks to support in many urban areas, and once even formed the centerpiece of a centrist-left party coalition that remained in power for 10 years in the decades between the Saurian Wars and the War against the League.
In more recent years, however, the Liberal-Democrats have been split by stances on the war, and since the war has begun have failed to ever have more than 10 percent of the Assembly and a handful of Senate seats. A portion of the party signed on for the wartime supercoalition with the Liberals, Christian-Conservatives, and Progressives. However, a sizable part serves as the most powerful Opposition to the Government, a branch that favors suing for peace after decades of war; a sizable portion would prefer alliance with the League to reunite Mankind against potential alien threats like the Saurians.
The British branch of the party is often accused by their political opponents of having become the nesting ground for the Fabians, an old Socialist group from 20th Century England (they derived their name from Fabius Maximus, the aristocratic Roman leader who advised a policy of attrition and patience in fighting Hannibal in the Second Punic War) that opposed the idea of Socialist revolution in contrast to an idea that Man would slowly evolve into a Socialist society. The Fabians were considered a part of the World Society, and rumors of Fabians having gone with the Exodus and certain figures' association with their continued existance have provoked slander and libel lawsuits, political scandals, and general public uproar since the Landing.
